Dr. Maria Cole
President
My inspiration to run in 2022 stemmed from a conversation with one of our family members a few years ago.
Their words—“…the infrastructure to build Black community”—continue to drive me every day. There is much work to be done, and we have only just begun. We are on a mission to create a dynamic, engaged, and intellectual community that spans generations, impacts the college, and transforms our students’ experiences. We are at a pivotal moment with the opportunity to make a significant, lasting impact on the legacy of BADA. This is why I serve as BADA President.
During my tenure, we have successfully:
- Built a College Admissions Committee to address the challenges of a monumental SCOTUS decision, making a significant and intentional impact on Black student admissions and enrollment at Dartmouth.
- Developed a mentoring program based on feedback from BADA members, designed with the architects of the “Gold Standard” of mentoring programs under Coach Buddy Teevens ’79, along with students and faculty.
- Established a BADA-specific donor program for our campus initiatives, showcasing our network and impact across the Dartmouth community.
We are only at the beginning of building the infrastructure to “build Black community.” We are just starting to identify and embrace the opportunities of “Aut viam inveniam aut faciam”—we will either find a way or make one.
We are an integral thread in the fabric of Dartmouth. Now is the time to recognize our true impact on the global leadership and contributions Black alumni have made to the legacy of Dartmouth.
