Barack Obama became the first sitting president to visit a federal prison. He invited VICE along to film the historic event for part of our new documentary, Fixing the System, which investigates America’s broken criminal justice system.
President Obama’s presence transforms these inmates from pariahs to men with stories; men who made mistakes; men who might not even be here were it not for the draconian treatment of (and the timely light shone on) non-violent drug offenders.
This documentary falls right in step with the 2012 documentary by Eugene Jarecki called House We Live In, which details the War on Drugs and the many negative downstream impacts and failures to the experience of men and women of color in America.
